Morgan Stanley is offering a paid summer internship and $10,000.00
scholarship to JUNIOR students interested in their Finance, Operations
and Technology divisions.

The Richard B. Fisher Scholarship program is a competitive scholarship
program established in June 1993 to provide outstanding students of
Black and Hispanic descent, who have been historically
underrepresented as employees in the financial services industry, with
(i) a financial award for exceptional academic achievement, (ii) a
summer internship the summer prior to graduation with Morgan Stanley
and (iii) a meaningful relationship with one of the premier firms in
the industry.Sstudents of all majors and disciplines are encouraged to
apply. The application deadline is Monday, February 8, 2010.

Morgan Stanley Richard B. Fisher Scholars are selected to work as
summer analysts in the firm’s Finance, Operations or Technology
divisions. In order to be eligible for the scholarship students must
be currently enrolled as a junior at the time of this application,
have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on a scale of
4.0), be of Black or Hispanic descent and have a desire to work in the
financial services industry. Recipients of the scholarship are
awarded $10,000 for their senior year.

Dr. King Day of Service - A Day On, Not a Day Off!

Purpose

The National Society of Black Engineers and the Black Action Society at the University of Pittsburgh have partnered to plan the 2010 MLK Day of Service. The event was programmed to engage the student population of the University of Pittsburgh in the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life. The student community of Pittsburgh will be given an opportunity to give back to the community for which the students live in as well as teach and learn the life and ways of Dr. King. Students will get the chance to make a positive impact on the community with hopes to positively affect the community that has raised these college students through their adult years. Also, students are to volunteer with the hopes to inspire some child to want to attend college in the future as an effort to increase the society’s literacy.

On this day of service, these two organizations plan on partnering with several other student organizations to do acts of kindness in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Student leaders of both organizations are encouraging other students as well as the Pittsburgh community to make the holiday “a day on, not a day off.”

The event will take place Monday, January 18th, 2010 during 11:00AM and 3:00PM. A brief orientation will occur at 10:00AM on that Monday on the main campus of the University of Pittsburgh in Oakland, Pennsylvania.

Projects:

The projects that have been planned focus on the following areas:

Increasing the literacy of children

-Read to the children and educate them about the life of Dr. King through various hospitals, community centers, and local libraries

-Pack children books that will be shipped to facilities or homes to encourage childhood literacy

Providing clothing to unfortunate adults and youth

-Conduct a clothing drive three weeks prior to the event

-Donate winter jackets to infants in foster care

Provide mentoring to misguided youth in the Pittsburgh area

Feeding those whom are unable to provide food for their selves

-Work with area Food Banks, homeless shelters, and soup kitchens to make sure that the less fortunate are being reached.

This event is not only restricted to the University of Pittsburgh student community. People of all ages,

backgrounds, and abilities are encouraged to serve on Martin Luther King’s Day, and to make the day the beginning of an ongoing commitment to a cause that is meaningful to them and serves a need in the Pittsburgh community.

How your organization/ corporation can help?

Several local Pittsburgh organizations and corporations have offered to join in the planning and fulfillment of this day of service. Your organization may also be involved in this day of service. As part of his United We Serve initiative, President Obama has called upon all Americans to make service a part of their daily lives. Investing Now Mentor Application

INVESTING NOW is starting a Mentoring Program for students in the 9th-11th grade, and they are looking for mentors.

All NSBE members are encouraged to apply, regardless of the applicant's year of study (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduates). Mentors from all disciplines are encouraged to apply! In order to apply, it is not necessary to be studying engineering!

The mentoring application is attached to this email. The application will be due by Monday, December 7, 2009 by 12pm. INVESTING NOW is also asking for clearances for individuals who would like to serve as a mentor, however, if students don’t have them, INVESTING NOW will pay for the clearance.

The application is to be returned to Ms. LaTrenda Leonard by December 7th in office 4119 Posvar Hall.

Orientation for students will be on Thursday, Dec. 10 in Room 1175 in Benedum Hall at 7:15pm. If you want to participate in the mentoring program orientation is mandatory.

Directions to CMU: Walk up Forbes Avenue towards Squirrel Hill

(Morewood Avenue) or take the 61 ABC or 59U. Take the bus to the

Forbes and Morewood (Carnegie Mellon Stop). The bus will stop closer

the UC (on the left) than Warner Hall (on the right). Walk up the

walkway towards the UC and enter through the first doors you see. Take

the stairs up to the second floor. Once you are on the second floor,

make a right and go down the hallway. When you see a seating area make

a left and continue down this hallway. Danforth Lounge will be the

room at the end of the hallway with clear double doors.

National Conference Passport Information

Greetings,

My name is Harold Wilson and I am the conference planning chair for the 2009-2010 term for the University of Pittsburgh National Society of Black Engineers chapter (N.S.B.E.). All of you have registered for the national convention that will take place in Toronto, Canada on March 31, 2010 through April 4, 2010. Hopefully all of you are aware that going to another country requires you to have a passport. We will be having a United States Post Office official on campus in the next 2 or 3 weeks for people to apply for their passport. We will need you to sign up for time slots between 10 a.m. -3 p.m. The time slots will be in thirty minute intervals starting with 10 a.m. as the first slot. The sign-up will be on a first come basis based on whoever emails me first with their time. You have until Wednesday October 7, 2009. After that date, we will open up to the other members in N.S.B.E. Since most of us have different times we attend class throughout the week, email your preferred time for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Remember, you can always go to the post office and do the paperwork there. But you will have to wait in a line with other people who are trying to get their passport too if you choose the post office route. If you have any questions, feel free to email me and I will get back to you as soon as I am able to. Thank you.

This Homecoming will mark the 40th Anniversary of the Pitt African American Alumni Counsel (AAAC). With the theme being Sankofa: a Ghanaian phrase meaning to go back and retrieve what is ours. This year, the alumni plan on doing that and plan on coming to visit their alma mater in records numbers!

NSBE plans to host a Student-Alumni Mixer on Saturday, October 24th at 12pm. The event will be in 1175 Benedum. Lunch will be provided. Many young and mature alumni plan to attend the event. This event is one that you would regret missing. So, do yourself a favor and come out to meet and network with the distinguished alumni who are excited to meet you!
